Your School Has Offered Admission but JAMB CAPS Has Not Updated: What to Check
Your name is on the school’s admission list, or your school portal says you have been offered admission. But when you check JAMB CAPS, it still shows “Not Admitted” or “Admission in Progress”.
Start by checking your O’Level results on CAPS, any pending transfer offer and whether the school has formally recommended you to JAMB. JAMB identifies these as checks for candidates whose institutions have shortlisted them but whose CAPS status has not changed to “Admitted”.
The difference between the two portals does not, by itself, tell you whether admission has failed or whether you only need to wait. You need to establish which part of the process is outstanding.
This guide covers UTME and Direct Entry admissions processed through JAMB CAPS.
Why your school portal and JAMB CAPS may show different information
The school’s admission process and the final update on CAPS involve different stages. An institution can publish information on its own portal while the corresponding admission is still moving through CAPS.
JAMB’s CAPS system involves institutional admission officers, heads of institutions and JAMB desk officers. It also allows institutions to process admissions in batches. That helps explain why every candidate’s status may not change at the same time.
However, a school admission letter does not replace the JAMB admission letter for an admission that must pass through CAPS. JAMB’s official position is that admissions covered by this process must be processed through CAPS, with the JAMB admission letter available through eFacility.
Use the difference between your records as a reason to check the process, especially if a payment or registration deadline is approaching.
1. Confirm exactly what the school has offered you
Read the school’s notice and the message on your personal portal carefully.
Being eligible for admission, passing screening, appearing on a screening list and receiving an admission offer are different things. A general announcement that admission has started also does not confirm that your own application has been successful.
Check that the offer contains the correct:
- Name and JAMB registration number.
- Institution and campus, where applicable.
- Programme.
- Academic session.
- Entry route: UTME or Direct Entry.
Save the offer letter or download the relevant page. If you found your name on a circulated PDF, confirm that the list came from the institution’s official website or another channel the institution identifies as official.
This gives you a reliable record to refer to when contacting admissions.
2. Check the correct JAMB profile and examination year
Open JAMB eFacility and sign in to the profile connected to your application. Use the admission-status service, select the relevant examination year and access CAPS.
An old examination year or a different profile can lead you to inspect a record that does not correspond to your current offer.
If CAPS opens on your phone but displays only a welcome page, try your browser’s desktop-site option or use a computer. An official Ignatius Ajuru University of Education admission guide has advised candidates to use desktop mode when the mobile view does not display the full CAPS menu. A display problem alone does not establish your admission status.
Check the admission-status section itself before concluding that nothing has changed.
3. Confirm that your O’Level results are visible on CAPS
Do not stop at “I uploaded my results during screening”.
Uploading results to a school portal and uploading them to JAMB CAPS are separate requirements where the institution asks for both. For example, UNILAG’s 2026/2027 notice required uploads to both platforms and instructed candidates to check that their complete, correct results appeared on CAPS.
Open the O’Level section and inspect the actual entries. Check your examination type, examination year, subjects and grades. If you are using two sittings, confirm that both relevant results are recorded.
A payment receipt or an assurance from a cybercafé does not show you what is currently on your record.
If results are missing or incorrect, take your result details to an accredited JAMB CBT centre for assistance. Once the correction is completed, check the record again.
If everything is already correct, avoid repeatedly paying to upload the same results without identifying another problem. Move on to the next check.
4. Look for a pending offer under Transfer Approval
Your school may be considering you for a different course from the one you originally selected.
Check Transfer Approval on CAPS, particularly if the programme on your school offer differs from your original application.
Accepting a proposed transfer and accepting admission are separate actions. Federal University Lokoja’s October 2026 admission notice, for example, instructed applicants offered alternative programmes to respond to the transfer first and then separately respond to the admission offer.
Before responding, read the exact course name. For a nursing applicant, an offer for another health-related programme should not be assumed to lead to the same nursing qualification.
Also check whether the institution requires a formal change of course. COOU’s 2026/2027 supplementary admission notice required affected candidates to accept the transfer and complete a change of course to the new programme. Follow the instructions applicable to your institution and session.
Do not change to a random course simply because someone says it will make CAPS update.
5. Direct Entry applicants should check qualification verification
If you applied through Direct Entry, checking your O’Level results may not resolve every outstanding requirement.
Look for instructions about verifying the qualification you used for Direct Entry. For example, UNN’s 2026/2027 screening notice required Direct Entry candidates to ensure that their A’Level qualifications were verified through the Nigerian Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System, NIPEDS.
Ask your admissions office whether any qualification verification or document requirement remains outstanding on your application. Use the procedure specified for your qualification and institution.
6. Ask whether the school has submitted your admission recommendation
If your results are visible and there is no unresolved transfer, contact the school’s admissions office.
The useful question is:
“Has my admission recommendation been submitted to JAMB, and is there any outstanding issue on my record?”
JAMB’s guidance specifically tells affected candidates to confirm that their institution has formally recommended them for final clearance. The status changes to “Admitted” after the institutional recommendation receives JAMB approval.
Include enough information for the office to locate your application:
- Full name and JAMB registration number.
- Programme and academic session.
- Date the school offered admission.
- Exact status currently displayed on CAPS.
- Any approaching acceptance or registration deadline.
A screenshot can help, but send it privately through an official contact channel. Keep your password, verification codes and other login credentials out of the message.
You can write:
I received an admission offer for [programme] for the [session] academic session on [date]. My JAMB registration number is [number], but CAPS currently shows [status]. My O’Level results are visible, and my Transfer Approval section shows [state]. Please confirm whether my admission recommendation has been submitted to JAMB and whether I need to resolve any outstanding requirement. The school’s acceptance deadline is [date].
How long should you wait for CAPS to update?
There is no reliable universal waiting period you can apply to every institution and applicant.
A claim that CAPS must update within 24 hours, 72 hours or seven days is not enough to plan around. Your next action should depend on what the school confirms and whether you have an outstanding requirement.
| What you find | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Your O’Level results are missing or incorrect | Get the record checked at an accredited JAMB CBT centre. |
| A transfer offer is waiting | Review the programme and respond according to the official instructions. |
| The school confirms your recommendation is pending | Ask whether you need to act and how the delay affects your deadline. |
| The school confirms submission but the mismatch remains unresolved | Raise the issue through JAMB’s official support channel. |
| Your acceptance deadline is close | Contact admissions immediately and request written guidance. |
Do not interpret another applicant’s update as proof that your own admission has been rejected. Equally, do not keep refreshing indefinitely when an identifiable problem needs attention.
Should you pay the school’s acceptance fee while CAPS is pending?
Check the institution’s instructions before making that decision.
Ignoring a genuine acceptance deadline can put your place at risk. Paying a fee, however, does not itself resolve an incomplete CAPS record.
If the deadline is close, ask admissions to confirm in writing:
- Whether candidates with pending CAPS status should pay.
- Whether an extension is available.
- What happens to the payment if the admission cannot be completed.
- Whether any action is outstanding on your application.
Make payments only through the institution’s verified payment process and keep the receipt. Do not pay a person who promises to “activate”, “push” or guarantee your admission.
When to contact JAMB
If the school cannot resolve the discrepancy, use the official JAMB support portal to raise a ticket. The portal also provides a service for tracking existing tickets.
Explain what each portal shows, attach the relevant evidence and include the response you received from the school. A specific report is more useful than “My CAPS is not working”.
For example, state that the institution has confirmed submitting your recommendation, your results are visible and no transfer is awaiting a response, but your admission status remains unchanged.
When the offer eventually appears on CAPS, verify the institution and programme, follow JAMB’s current instructions for responding to the offer, and obtain your JAMB admission letter when available. Then complete the school’s clearance requirements within its stated deadlines.
