JAMB Transfer Approval and Change of Course: What Applicants Need to Understand
JAMB Transfer Approval is where you accept or reject an institution’s proposal to move you to another programme on CAPS. Change of Course is the service used to update your registered course choice. The two processes can be connected, but completing one does not necessarily complete the other.
There is also a third action: accepting the admission offer itself. Federal University Lokoja’s 2026/2027 guidance expressly separates accepting a transfer from subsequently accepting admission into the new programme.
Understanding these differences helps you avoid accepting an unwanted course, paying for an unnecessary change or leaving an admission step unfinished.
Transfer Approval, Change of Course and Admission Acceptance Compared
| Action | What it does | Who starts it? |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer Approval | Records your response to a proposed move to another programme on CAPS. | The institution proposes the move; you accept or reject it. |
| Change of Course | Updates your registered course choice through JAMB’s correction service. | You apply, either by choice or following an admission instruction. |
| Admission acceptance | Records your acceptance of the actual admission offer. | You respond after the offer becomes available. |
JAMB publishes a separate Change of Course/Institution procedure. Universities’ CAPS guidance also distinguishes programme-transfer decisions from admission acceptance.
This article concerns applicants being considered for admission. It is not a guide to transferring between universities after you have enrolled.
What Does a Transfer Proposal Mean?
A transfer proposal means your institution wants to move your application from the original programme to another one.
The reason depends on the institution and your application. It should not automatically be interpreted as “your score was too low”. For example, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education’s published guidance identifies UTME and O’Level subject combinations as reasons for considering applicants for another programme.
Read the proposed programme carefully. Similar-sounding courses can lead to different qualifications and careers.
For instance, if a Nursing applicant receives a proposal for another science programme, that proposal should be assessed on the merits of the new course. It should not be accepted on an agent’s promise that the student can easily move back to Nursing later.
How to Check Transfer Approval on JAMB CAPS
- Open the official JAMB e-Facility portal.
- Sign in with the email address and password attached to your JAMB profile.
- Select Check Admission Status.
- Select the correct examination year and confirm your registration number where requested.
- Open Access My CAPS.
- Select Transfer Approval.
- Read the institution and proposed course details before responding.
This navigation is documented in universities’ official CAPS instructions. Follow any additional verification instructions displayed in your current session.
If the menu is hidden on your phone, try your browser’s Desktop site option. IAUE’s guidance specifically recommends desktop mode where the mobile view displays only the welcome screen.
If you cannot complete the action, use a JAMB-accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. Federal University Lokoja’s current guidance recommends those channels for responding to transfer and admission offers.
What Happens When You Accept or Reject?
If you accept the transfer
You agree to the proposed programme movement.
JAMB’s 2024 admission-policy presentation states that an accepted transfer moves the candidate to the new programme and directs that the candidate must be admitted. It also identifies a change-of-programme step needed for admission-letter printing.
However, an accepted transfer is not itself your final admission record. Continue checking the admission section and complete the remaining instructions. Your transfer response and acceptance of the admission offer are separate actions.
If you reject the transfer
The proposed movement is not effected, and you remain on your preferred programme under the published transfer guidance.
Remaining on that programme does not mean a place has been reserved for you. Rejecting an alternative does not, by itself, secure admission into your original choice.
If you do not respond
JAMB’s policy presentation says a candidate who does not respond is not moved through the proposed transfer. Silence should therefore not be treated as acceptance.
It may also cost you the offer where a response deadline applies. Check your institution’s notice rather than leaving the proposal unattended.
Do You Still Need Change of Course After Accepting a Transfer?
Yes, applicants can be required to complete a formal change of course after accepting a transfer. Do not assume that clicking Accept has completed every update to your JAMB records.
A recent example is COOU’s 2026/2027 supplementary-admission notice. It instructed successful supplementary applicants to:
- Monitor Transfer Approval and accept the proposed move.
- Complete change of course to the new programme.
- Ensure their O’Level results were uploaded correctly.
These were separate requirements in the same notice.
Follow the instruction attached to your offer or supplementary application. If you have already changed to the correct course, ask an accredited CBT centre or the admissions office to check the record before paying for the same action again.
How to Complete a Change of Course
Before making the change, confirm the exact programme name, institution, eligibility requirements and whether the institution is still considering applicants.
JAMB’s published procedure places the service under Correction of Data, followed by Course/Institution. It involves generating a transaction reference, making payment, identifying the examination year and registration number, selecting the available choices and submitting the request.
JAMB’s current support guidance directs candidates to accredited CBT centres for course/institution changes. Take your registration details and the relevant institutional instruction, then check the proposed entries before submission. Keep the payment receipt and confirmation.
How much does it cost?
JAMB’s public Correction of Data page lists ₦2,500 for Change of Course/Institution. Confirm the amount displayed for your transaction and request a breakdown of any separate centre charges.
That published fee is for the correction service; it should not be described as a fee for being offered admission.
Can You Change Course Without Receiving a Transfer Proposal?
Yes. A candidate can initiate a change of course without first receiving a CAPS transfer proposal.
You might do this after reviewing your results or in response to a university’s supplementary-admission notice. JAMB’s support guidance confirms that course/institution changes are available after UTME results, subject to the applicable admission window.
Before changing:
- Check the new course’s O’Level and UTME requirements through JAMB IBASS.
- Confirm the institution’s current score and screening conditions.
- Check whether a separate supplementary application is required.
- Confirm that the relevant application deadline has not passed.
Changing your registered course is not a substitute for submitting an application the institution requires. COOU’s supplementary notice, for example, imposed eligibility conditions and separate steps for applicants seeking its available programmes.
What to Do After Accepting a Transfer
First, complete any required course correction and confirm that your O’Level results are present and accurate.
Next, monitor Admission Status. When the actual offer becomes available, follow the current instructions to accept it if you wish to proceed. Then obtain your JAMB admission letter and follow the school’s clearance and registration requirements.
Do not stop monitoring merely because the transfer page shows that you have responded.
Why might CAPS still show “Not Admitted” or “Admission in Progress”?
Check whether an outstanding step is preventing processing. JAMB’s support guidance identifies missing or unverified O’Level uploads, institutional recommendation and an unaccepted transfer proposal as matters to review.
If you have completed your part, contact the admissions office with your registration number, proposed programme and the date you accepted the transfer. Ask whether your admission recommendation has been submitted or whether anything remains outstanding.
There is no basis for promising that every accepted transfer will produce a visible admission offer within a fixed number of hours.
Is There a Deadline to Respond?
Use the deadline stated by your institution or displayed with the offer.
For example, Federal University Lokoja’s notice dated 15 October 2026, covering its 2026/2027 exercise, required applicants to respond to transfer or admission offers within 48 hours. That is a specific institutional instruction, not proof that every school uses the same deadline.
A functioning JAMB portal also does not establish that a school’s supplementary application window remains open.
Common Problems and the Right Next Step
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No transfer proposal is displayed | Continue checking admission updates. An empty transfer section alone does not establish rejection. |
| The proposed course is different from what the school told you | Contact admissions before accepting. Supply the conflicting notice or message. |
| You accepted the transfer but admission has not appeared | Review outstanding requirements and ask admissions about the recommendation. |
| Your JAMB and school records show different courses | Ask admissions and JAMB Support which record needs correction before another payment. |
| You clicked the wrong response | Contact admissions and JAMB Support promptly. Do not assume a routine change-of-course payment reverses the response. |
| You paid for a change but cannot confirm completion | Use your transaction reference and receipt to request a status check before paying again. |
For unresolved JAMB issues, use the official support portal. Include the examination year, registration number, relevant dates and a screenshot of the problem. Keep passwords and one-time codes out of the enquiry.
Should You Accept a Course You Did Not Originally Choose?
Accept it when you understand the programme and are willing to study it. Compare its curriculum, qualification, costs and career direction before deciding.
Do not base the decision entirely on a promised future transfer. COOU’s cited supplementary notice, for instance, stated that intra-university transfer could only be possible after two years of study. That timing condition did not promise approval for every student.
If your plan depends on later changing departments, obtain the university’s written transfer rules first. Decide whether you would still accept the present offer if that later move did not happen.
